2009 SAN FRANCISCO BOOK FESTIVAL WINNERS NAMED

SAN FRANCISCO (May 3, 2009) _ The 2009 San Francisco Book Festival has named “War of Words: A True Tale of Newsprint and Murder” by former Bay Area reporter Simon Read as the grand prize winner of its annual competition.

In the San Francisco of the mid-1800s, the term “circulation war” was literal, as beatings and bloodlettings in and around the newsroom were not uncommon. Into this stepped Charles de Young, cofounder of the San Francisco Chronicle, who focused on the future mayor, Issac Kalloch.

Their explosive battles captivated a nation and the judges of the competition, who felt that the Union Square Press book captures the raw intensity that marks the city even today.

Read and other winners will be honored in a private ceremony at the Hotel Rex on Friday, May 8.

2009 GREEN BOOK FESTIVAL NAMES WINNERS

LOS ANGELES (April 20, 2009) _ The 2009 Green Book Festival has named Saci Lloyd’s “The Carbon Diaries: 2015” as the grand prize winner of its annual competition honoring books that contribute to greater understanding, respect for and positive action on the changing worldwide environment.

Lloyd’s novel details the world of sixteen-year-old Laura Brown, who lives in a carbon-constrained U.K. where everything from heat to transportation to the daily shower is regulated by government-issued points. In a world gone eco-mad, and with the highest-category storm in history headed straight for her, Laura clings to her band, the Dirty Angels, and dreams of a normal life.

For its vivid portrayal of a world that may become the new normal in short order, and for its page-turning way of making the reality of the environment’s possible future understandable to the average reader, the judges have awarded “The Carbon Diaries: 2015” the grand prize of $1500.
